This Blogs Needs a New Name
I have been working on this blog since 2007. When I started, I thought I would write about the Borough of Highland Park, New Jersey. In turns out, I rarely write about Highland Park, and the name Here in HP confuses some people who think of Hewlett-Packard. In any case, few of my readers live in Highland Park. I prefer to post my art, my art sketches, my Photoshop and Illustrator attempts, my photos of nature, food and whatever else looks appealing, a few book reviews, a recipe here and there. I’ve decided the blog needs a new name.
So, how to go about making a decision? Fortunately, the urls will not have to change. The blog is merely positioned as a subdirectory of my main domain:
https://www.leoraw.com/blog/
It’s just that annoying Here in HP that I do not like. I want something related to art. Here are a few ideas:
– Sketching Out
– Sketched Out
– Sketch and Photo
The idea of Sketched Out is that I put up sketches when I can, but most of the time I am sketched out, so you get a photo or a book review or a recipe.
Obviously, I’ve got sketch on the brain. I would love to get your help. I was thinking of making this an official contest; however, I read over contest rules, and one must have a definite end to a contest. I’m afraid the unofficial contest does not end until I finally like the new name. Also, one is encouraged by U.S. law to limit the contest to only U.S. entrants, as one would have to follow the contest rules of every single country in order to make it internationally legal. Well, I’m not doing that, either. So this is an extremely unofficial contest. Unofficially, I may give a prize to the winner (an Amazon gift certificate). And equally unofficially, I may post the names (with links to their blogs or to a recent blog post of theirs) of the honorable mentions.
So, do you have any good ideas on what I should rename this blog?
Update – more ideas:
- Sketchy
- Drawn Out
- Sketches and Stuff
- Sketches and Such
- Rough Sketch

I have an idea but it may be more suitable for a subtitle because of its length: 'Sketching out the (or my) world one post at a time'.
I'll keep thinking!
Leora says
You have certainly got the basic idea of what I want to accomplish! Thank you for your thoughtfulness on this matter.
Lorri says
The World through my sketching. I know, it is a bit too long.
Leora says
Yes, I need shorter. And I don't think it really fits. I think I post about a tiny, weeny fragment of the great big world. But I so appreciate the try!
Nadine says
What about Drawn Out - close to your Sketched Out, but you can play on connotation of the saying with something like 'but never boring' -
Leora says
Nadine, it's nice. And it's short! I'll ponder over these names for a week or two.

When I had to change names for my blog I was so so confused that I named it after me! :)
Maybe sketchy? ;) (I bet you will come up with something so much better!)
Leora says
I like Sketchy. It's cute and REALLY short.

I like all the Sketch ideas but I especially like Rough Sketch because I think it has the right "bloggy" quality--you know, blog articles are not necessarily quite as polished as a newspaper op-ed would be. But mostly I like it because it captures what you do but also lends itself to a good tagline--something like "Rough Sketch-art, photos, doodles and ideas"--and then you could add a further descriptor.
I'm excited that you're doing this because we had discussed this a while back. It took me a long time to figure out that. Here in HP was not just about information about upcoming Highland Park activities.

I like Rough Sketch, too. If you want to imply greater range, you can go for the longer, "Rough and Smooth Sketches" or to stress works in progress that will change, "Rough Draft."
Leora says
I think Rough Draft would be more applicable for a writer. But thanks for the ideas and "vote."
Leora says
Miriam, yes, I was encouraged by our discussion a while back. I came up with Rough Sketch when I put "thesaurus sketch" into Google. I already have a longer tag line that I like (but I will probably edit when I do the name change).
Daniel Saunders says
Art and Soul.
Leora says
It's a nice name, but I don't think Soul is really a good fit for this blog. Thanks!
Lorri says
Sketched don't necessarily have to relate to drawing...writing involves sketches/drafts, so does photography as far as composition. Any art form includes sketching.
Sketchy Leora. Sketchy me.
Leora says
Lorri, chances are good Sketch will be part of the title. I am just not sure whether I prefer Sketching Out or Rough Sketch or another version.
Thanks for your ideas.

Hmmm...read the comments too and some good ideas..if I think of something I will come back and post it..but I agree it should have something arty in it...Michelle
Jane says
How about " sketch-work". Or "sketch pastiche"
Leora says
Jane, those are interesting. Thanks for the input!

I'm a little late to the conversation, but I really like 'Rough Sketch', or maybe 'Rough Sketches'. As was said earlier, it's a good description for a blog, given that many of us have limited time, and are willing to post 'rougher' work... ok, well I am, anyway!
