Portulaca or moss rose, which I grow in front of my house bordering the sidewalk, is one of my favorite flowers. I love watching the little buds grow. I love looking at the flowers in the middle of the day to see which one is in full bloom. They don’t need a lot of care, just weeding around them and sunlight.

Today’s Flowers is hosted by Luiz Santilli Jr. Thank you, Luiz!

Ruby Tuesday Rides the Rapids

or

You can’t please everyone all the time

We went canoeing on the Delaware River between New York State and Pennsylvania. Most of us had fun. My daughter did not. She wanted the gentle course we chose last summer, the one my boys, who are ages 11 and 13, thought boring.

Can you see the tiny red canoe in the distance? Halfway my eldest son and I switched, so he did not have to yell at me to stop taking pictures. It is not easy nor advisable to be the one steering a canoe and taking photos at the same time. On the second half, I sat in the front, my husband in the back, my six-year-old daughter in the middle. Every time we crossed some rapids, she would shriek: “Oar! You have to oar!” I did try to tell her the proper word is paddle, but that didn’t interest her much.

Finally, at some point she refused to do the section of rapids ahead of us. So daughter and I hiked the side while husband did the short stretch of rapids. He waited for us on the bottom. I used this as an opportunity to photograph:

I apologize for including the above photo with no red on a Ruby Tuesday post. I’m sure you will forgive me. If I squint at the stems, I can see slivers of red. Can you?

Yesterday in my haste I mistakenly deleted a favorite red leaf photo from the camera. Has this happened to you? Do you then walk around with a pang in your heart for a day? (quick, someone send me to the nearest photoblogger’s anonymous meeting). This one with its signs of approaching autumn will have to do:

We passed under a bridge with a red dotted sign:

And I didn’t notice what this sign said until we were right on top of the diver, I just saw red:

To participate in Ruby Tuesday, post a photo (or more) with a little red or a LOT of red. Then visit Mary the Teach at http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/ to submit your link.

Ode to a Peach

Oh, peach, how I love thy juiciness.
I will miss thee come fall.
You provide nourishment for my eldest son
And decorate my window sills with your yellows and reds.

As the peaches in New Jersey are luscious and seem to be almost red in late August, I present this peach as my Ruby Tuesday post.

Rose of Sharon

Song of Songs, 2:1 —

אֲנִי חֲבַצֶּלֶת הַשָּׁרוֹן, שׁוֹשַׁנַּת הָעֲמָקִים

"I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys."

Even though this is almost definitely NOT the flower referred to by Song of Songs, it is a beautiful flower to have growing in one’s backyard. Mine grew “by accident”, a cast-off from one of my neighbors’ plants. It grows like a weed. I just have to trim what’s growing around the little flowering tree.

This is my first submission to Today’s Flowers, which appear every Monday.

Rudbeckia Associations Game

A photo of my rudbeckia against the fence in our backyard. Here’s the game: instead of telling me what you like about the photo, write some associations. For example, I look at this and I think, “Tom Sawyer.” Because of the story where he painted the fence white. Words or phrases are fine. Have fun.

Vermont Sky

Two summers ago we visited Killington, Vermont. Out of our condo window I took these sunset photos. Ski areas are great places to visit in the summer, with reasonable prices; this Killington condo building has both an indoor and outdoor pool. However, with the current price of gas, one has to spend a fair amount just to drive up there, and then it takes about 1.5 hours to drive further north to the Ben and Jerry’s factory, a must for ice-cream lovers of the world. It’s also fairly cool at this time of year in Vermont, not ideal for outdoor swimming. We loved the corn maze with the baseball diamond theme nearby.

Thursday Challenge: My Fisherman

gone fishing
I took this photo last year, of my middle son at the annual Cub Scout “Kinus” or two-day overnight at a Boy Scout camp with other Jewish campers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I’m entering it in Thursday Challenge, where the theme this week is: “BLUE” (Water, Sky, Flowers, Birds, Eyes, The Blues, Melancholy,…). Someday, I would like to paint this in oils. Meanwhile, enjoy the photo. Click on it to see it larger.

I guess the “blues” part for me is he is now at sleep-away camp; we heard from him via letters, and he is having a great time! Without us! I miss him.
